USCIS is responsible for overseeing the nation’s legal immigration system, which includes adjudicating3 L. _/ F& c# f. [1 l! N% O6 x
asylum claims. The agency currently faces a crisis-level backlog of 311,000 pending asylum cases as of
5 m- q. j* h! f9 V' [- EJan. 21, 2018, making the asylum system increasingly vulnerable to fraud and abuse. This backlog has
7 ^7 N7 M: ~4 o5 j1 G1 Lgrown by more than 1750 percent over the last five years, and the rate of new asylum applications has/ {' z5 I" _: @/ ^: |, @8 A$ S& D
more than tripled.

1. Applications that were scheduled for an interview, but the interview had to be rescheduled at the
5 S7 ]7 o: b* v6 l0 A0 w/ u5 uapplicant’s request or the needs of USCIS;
& W; D) ?+ Q( [ k2. Applications pending 21 days or less since filing; and8 Y7 v7 i9 w8 Q! T, w+ q: k3 H9 _
3. All other pending applications, starting with newer filings and working back toward older filings.
